Why is it so difficult to do a PhD? by Filipa P. Moraes, PhD Answer by Filipa P. Moraes, PhD: It is hard because you need to be self motivated, resilient and it is isolating because you need to set up your own metrics. The only metrics you have set from the outside are: a) publishing papers and b) finishing the thesis in due time. But there are a bunch of other metrics that contribute for that, and those ones should be set by you: finishing experiments, set up collaborations, go to meetings, prepare communications, writing papers, be assertive when you need feedback, always communicate where are you at your work, make decisions, ASK FOR HELP – the majority of PhD students get intimidated by their supervisors or they think they are so afraid to ask stupid questions that they tend to avoid asking questions, and the problem gets bigger and bigger, this is so dangerous, because it gets harder and harder to overcome the obstacles. One friend of mine, an environmental engineer , once told me: “I can’t deal with research I am always feeling i don’t know enough. Can’t deal with that feeling”. A PhD is hard because you are always feeling stupid (read the importance of stupidity in scientific research: Journal of Cell Science). Why is it so difficult to do a PhD?

(PT) Concordo completamente com Kathryn VanArendonk no seu último texto quando diz que a personagem Hannah da série Girls nunca poderia ter aquela oferta de trabalho como Professora Universitária.

Aconselho vivamente a serie GIRLS de Lena Dunham, está muito bem escrita, é crua, aborda com honestidade as doenças mentais, lida com o corpo feminino de uma forma bastante real (finalmente temos celulite e gente roliça no écran, irra!) e desenvolve muito bem a ideia do que é estar perdido e não saber que caminho seguir, seja nas relações, seja no trabalho, etc.  No entanto este último episódio desiludiu-me e acredito que os académicos devem ter ficado um tanto irritados (os que vêem a série, pois claro). O que tem de insólito é que é oferecido à personagem de Hannah, uma posição como Professora numa Faculdade Americana. Hannah parece ser apanhada de surpresa pelo interesse da Professora Universitária, a entrevista é só uma, o processo de seleção é rapidíssimo, não houve candidatura, nem concurso público, etc. Longe de mim achar que Hannah não faria um excelente trabalho com os seus 100 alunos (!!), no entanto parece que o interesse da Faculdade por Hannah, está relacionado com o  que tem escrito na internet, porque “tem escrito muito bem na GQ e sabe muito bem o que é isso da internet….” Acredito que as Universidades Americanas estejam na crista da onda em inovação, mas é altamente inverosímil uma posição destas cair no colo da Hannah desta forma. Este foi o penúltimo episódio da série, pareceu-me arrumadinho demais, será que a autora sucumbiu à pressão de acabar a série com um “viveram felizes para sempre?” A série era a antítese disto, espero que o último episódio seja mais desarrumado e desconcertante.
